Respondus Assessment Tool
Respondus is a powerful tool for instructors to create and manage exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to eClass. Exams can be created offline using a familiar Windows environment and are transferable between different LMS tools.

Installing Respondus

The University of Alberta has obtained a campus-wide licence for Respondus. You must download the Respondus installation file from this website and activate it using the password obtained from CTL Technology Services. Files downloaded elsewhere will not be compatible with the U of A Activation Password.

  1. Download the Respondus installation program.
  2. Obtain the Activation Password by contacting respondus@ualberta.ca.
  3. The file you download is named "Respondus4Campus.exe". Locate the file on your computer and double-click it to start the installation program. During the installation process you will be prompted to enter the name of the institution, the local support contact, and the installation password. This information must be entered EXACTLY as provided in Step #2.
  4. We recommend that you accept the default settings for where the program will be installed. It is important to note that you are not able to download the software directly from the Respondus web site, nor are you able to use the password provided to activate a copy previously downloaded from their site.

NOTE: Our licence DOES permit you to install a copy of the Respondus software on a home computer. However, please note that you are not permitted to provide the Respondus software or the password information to anyone who is not affiliated with our institution. Such an action is a violation of our licensing agreement with Respondus and is also illegal. To enable us to meet licensing conditions, we require that anyone wishing to install Respondus contact us first so that we can verify their affiliation.

Respondus Test Bank

The latest version of Respondus allows easier access to textbook publisher's question banks. You can use these resources to create quizzes for practice or assessment in eClass utilizing pre-built questions designed specifically for your course textbook. The availability and type of questions depends on your particular textbook publisher and you will have to register with them to access questions (the Publisher will verify that you are using their textbook).

To get started using Test Bank, you must first install Respondus (see the section above). You must then update to the latest version:

  1. Open Respondus
  2. Click on 'Help' -> 'Check for Update'
  3. Select 'Get Update' and follow system instructions

Once you have updated, when you open Respondus there will be a new menu item on the main page, 'Test Bank Network'. Clicking on the link will open the wizard which will first walk you through locating your textbook and requesting a file code and password from the Publisher. Once you receive this access information, you can then Register your test banks using the file code and password. This will link your Respondus installation to the test bank and access any available questions.

For more information on using this Respondus feature, view their documentation:

Some textbooks also provide custom applications and pathways for obtaining and using their question banks -- be sure to get in touch with your publisher to see what they offer.

Respondus Contact / Help

If you have questions or problems using the Respondus or StudyMate software, you should first consult the online Help or Respondus User Guide. If you are unable to resolve your problem, direct your questions to:

E-mail: respondus@ualberta.ca

Phone: 780.492.9372

NOTE: Our licence with Respondus does NOT permit individuals to obtain support directly from Respondus. If our staff is unable to solve a particular question or problem, we will contact Respondus on your behalf.
